Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility follows the AUS Ordinance on PhD Programme, 2023:

• A Master’s degree (or 4-year/8-semester equivalent, or a 2-year Master’s after a 3-year Bachelor’s) with a minimum of 55% marks (or equivalent grade) in a subject same or allied to the department applied to.
• A 5% relaxation in marks is available for SC, ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), PWD, and EWS candidates.
• M.Phil holders who completed their programme under the 2016 UGC Regulations with 55% marks are also eligible.
• Candidates with a foreign degree recognised as equivalent by an approved assessment agency may also apply.

Whether your Master’s subject counts as “allied” to a given department is decided by that department — candidates with a Master’s outside the exact subject line are advised to check with the concerned department before paying the application fee.

Selection Process — NET, SLET & RET

Selection is based on one of three qualifying routes, followed by a compulsory interview:

• UGC-NET / CSIR-NET qualified candidates
• SLET qualified candidates
• RET (Research Entrance Test) — the university’s own written test, for candidates without a NET/SLET score

Even NET and SLET qualified candidates must appear for a mandatory Personal Interview / Viva Voce — no one is admitted on a certificate alone. Written test and viva are both scheduled on the same day, and departments must submit the composite score within 24 hours, so a well-prepared research statement matters as much as your score.

Application Fee

Fee is payable online through the admission portal. Candidates may apply to a maximum of two allied departments, but each application is treated separately and requires its own fee — so choose your second department in the same subject family (e.g., Computer Science + CSE) rather than an unrelated field.

• Master’s & Bachelor’s degree certificates and mark sheets
• Proof of 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s, if applying via the one-year Master’s route
• M.Phil degree/certificate (if applicable)
• NET / SLET scorecard (if applicable)
• Category certificate in the current central government format (SC/ST/OBC-NCL)
• EWS certificate (current financial year)
• Disability certificate, where applicable
• A valid government photo ID
• A one-page research statement/synopsis — recommended to carry for the interview even though not mandatory at the upload stage

2. Register with your basic details and create a login
3. Fill in academic, personal, and category details carefully
4. Select your department(s) of interest (maximum two allied departments)
5. Upload scanned documents in the specified format and size
6. Pay the applicable application fee online
7. Submit the form and download/print the confirmation for your records
8. Watch the portal for your admit card after verification

Non-NET Fellowship — What the Notice Says

The notification includes a note that the university may provide a Non-NET fellowship to selected candidates on a merit basis, subject to availability of funds received from the UGC. This means even candidates entering through the RET route could receive a university-funded fellowship if they rank high enough in the merit list — though this is discretionary and fund-dependent, not guaranteed.
