For the first time in India’s history, the Census of India 2027 is being conducted digitally, and citizens can now submit their household details online before the enumerator’s visit through a facility called Self Enumeration (SE). In Assam, the Self Enumeration window for the first phase (Houselisting and Housing Census) is open from 2nd August 2026 to 16th August 2026 on the official portal se.census.gov.in. This is a voluntary but strongly encouraged facility — every household will still be visited by a Census Enumerator regardless of self-enumeration, but completing it in advance speeds up that visit.

🎓 Who Can Self-Enumerate?

• Every household residing in Assam is eligible to use the Self Enumeration facility.
• A responsible adult member of the household, or the Head of the Household, can complete the form — it is not necessary that only the eldest/senior-most family member does it.
• Only one mobile number per household can be used for registration, and the same number cannot be used for another household.
• Self Enumeration is optional — households who do not complete it online will still have their information collected in person when the enumerator visits.

📝 Details to Keep Ready Before You Start

No documents need to be uploaded on the portal. However, keep the following information ready:

• An active, registered mobile number (for OTP verification)
• Name of the Head of the Household (cannot be changed after registration)
• Exact names and ages of all household members
• Details of the house structure — roof and wall material, number of rooms, ownership status (owned/rented)
• Source of drinking water, type of toilet, cooking fuel used
• Household assets — television, bicycle, two-wheeler, internet connection, etc.

💻 How to Apply — Step-by-Step Self Enumeration Process

1. Visit the official portal: Go to se.census.gov.in using a mobile, tablet, or computer (a laptop/desktop is recommended for the map-marking step).
2. Select your State: Choose “Assam” from the State/UT dropdown and complete the captcha verification.
3. Register your household: Enter the name of the Head of the Household and a valid mobile number.
4. Verify OTP: Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number and select your preferred language from the available regional options.
5. Fill household details: Answer the Houselisting and Housing Census questions covering house type, construction material, amenities, and assets.
6. Add family members: Enter the names and ages of all members residing in the household.
7. Mark your location: Pin your household’s location on the map (recommended on a larger screen for accuracy).
8. Review your answers: Carefully check all entered details on the confirmation screen — you can save progress as a draft and resume later before final submission.
9. Final Submit: Once confirmed, click “Final Submit.” No changes can be made after this step.
10. Save your SE ID: An 11-digit Self-Enumeration ID (SEID), prefixed with “H”, will be generated and sent via SMS (and email, if provided). Save or screenshot it.

• All data submitted is encrypted and stored on secure government servers.
• Individual census data is strictly confidential under the Census Act, 1948 and cannot be used in courts or to determine eligibility for any government scheme or benefit.
• Providing false or inaccurate information is an offence under the Census Act, 1948 and may attract a penalty.
• If an error is found after submission, it can be corrected by informing the enumerator during their house visit.
